ABB introduces new type of thickness gauge for aluminum hot rolling

by David Fleschen

Technology group ABB has launched a new version of its Millmate Thickness Gauge (MTG) specifically designed for the final stages of aluminum hot rolling, expanding the company’s measurement portfolio for the aluminum industry.

The newly developed MTG Box Gauge brings ABB’s proven pulsed eddy current measurement technology into the demanding environment of hot strip mills, enabling highly accurate thickness control for aluminum strip below 8 millimeters.

Precise measurement at the tail end of the hot rolling process is critical for product quality and yield optimization. Until now, this stage has been difficult to monitor reliably due to extreme temperatures, emulsions, and limited installation space.

ABB says the new gauge has been engineered to withstand these conditions. An upgraded IP66 sealing protects sensitive internal components from the water-oil emulsions used in rolling, while a redesigned internal cooling system directs cool air toward heat-sensitive electronics.

According to the company, the improved airflow can lower the operating temperature of the transmitting coil by up to 40°C, significantly enhancing durability and long-term performance.

Unlike conventional X-ray-based thickness measurement systems, the MTG Box Gauge operates without radiation. The pulsed eddy current principle eliminates safety concerns and reduces regulatory complexity, making the system easier to install and maintain.

Another key advantage is the ability to perform accurate single-side measurements. Traditional systems often require sensors on both sides of the strip, which can be difficult to implement in confined mill spaces. ABB’s solution simplifies integration and reduces maintenance effort.

The system is also alloy-independent, meaning it does not require recalibration when switching between different aluminum grades. This allows mills to run mixed production schedules without additional setup time or interruptions.

“Maintaining precise and reliable thickness measurements during the final stage of hot rolling has traditionally been a complex task for aluminum manufacturers,” said Lars Karlsson, Global Product Line Manager at ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division.

“Our MTG Box Gauge is the ultimate solution for aluminum hot rolling mills. Building on its proven success in cold rolling mills, this innovative factory-calibrated gauge offers improved durability to handle the toughest conditions. With alloy independence, safe technology, minimal maintenance, and single-side measurements, it ensures precision, reliability, and efficiency in aluminum hot rolling processes,” Karlsson added.

The launch builds on ABB’s strong position in process automation for the aluminum sector. In October 2025, the company was named “Manufacturer of the Year” at the Instrumentation & Electronics Awards in recognition of its contributions to production efficiency, waste reduction, and decarbonization efforts in the aluminum industry.
