ArcelorMittal has announced a strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) aimed at accelerating the use of cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and edge technologies across its global steelmaking operations.
Under the agreement, ArcelorMittal will integrate AWS cloud and AI technologies into its manufacturing processes, bringing operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) onto a common cloud infrastructure. According to the company, the initiative is intended to improve safety, asset reliability and energy efficiency while enabling greater automation.
AI applications on the plant floor
The collaboration will support the deployment of industrial internet of things (IIoT) technologies, real-time sensor data and machine learning directly within production facilities. Planned applications include predictive maintenance, AI-based quality control using computer vision, process optimization and digital twins of production assets and manufacturing lines.
"The next frontier of digital transformation for steel is on the plant floor," said Nik Puri, group CIO and CISO at ArcelorMittal. "With AWS, we are bringing cloud and AI directly to the point of production, connecting our assets and building plants that sense, learn and optimise in real time."
AWS will also develop a global education program designed to support the adoption of cloud and AI technologies across ArcelorMittal's workforce.
Lower-carbon steel for Amazon facilities
Alongside the digital collaboration, Amazon and ArcelorMittal have signed a multi-year supply framework agreement covering structural steel for projects across Europe and the UK.
Under the agreement, ArcelorMittal will supply its lower-carbon XCarb® steel for Amazon operational facilities and AWS data centers, supporting Amazon's target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
According to ArcelorMittal, the agreement reflects both companies' ambition to accelerate the decarbonization of construction while expanding the industrial use of AI and digital technologies in steel production.
