Berthold launches radiation portal monitoring solution for the steel industry

by David Fleschen

Berthold Technologies has introduced a modular radiation portal monitoring system designed for the automated detection of radioactive materials in steel industry applications, including scrap metal handling and vehicle inspection.

The system is intended for continuous gamma radiation monitoring of trucks, rail traffic, conveyors and scrap flows in industrial environments, helping steel producers improve operational safety and regulatory compliance.

Automated monitoring for scrap and vehicle inspection

According to the company, the Radiation Portal Monitor combines large-volume scintillation detectors with intelligent background radiation compensation to deliver stable and reproducible measurement results while reducing false alarms.

The system is designed for automated, non-contact operation and can be integrated at plant entrances, conveyor systems, scrap bins and railway tracks without interrupting material flow.

Berthold said the solution consists of three core components: radiation detectors, signal transmitters and PC-based monitoring software. The transmitter processes incoming signals, monitors background radiation, calculates alarm thresholds and controls alarm functions, while the software visualizes measurement data, supports reporting and enables integration with external systems and networks.

Flexible configuration for industrial environments

The portal monitoring system can also be equipped with optional accessories such as traffic light systems and license plate recognition for different operational requirements.

According to Berthold Technologies, the system offers high sensitivity for detecting low-level radioactive contamination in scrap metal, robust performance in demanding outdoor and industrial conditions, and adjustable alarm thresholds adapted to different scrap grades and background radiation levels.

The company said the solution is aimed at supporting reliable radiation monitoring in steel plants and recycling operations where contaminated scrap materials can pose operational and safety risks.

Berthold Technologies, headquartered in Bad Wildbad, Germany, has been developing radiometric measuring systems for industrial and research applications for more than 75 years.
