Eurometal celebrates 75 years anniversary: Digitization and transition in focus

by David Fleschen

EUROMETAL, one of Europe’s key associations in the steel and metal distribution sector, marked its 75th anniversary with a high-level conference in Luxembourg. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the current state and future prospects of the European steel industry.

In his opening speech, EUROMETAL President Alexander M. Julius reflected on the sector’s evolution since the 1990s, describing that decade as a “golden era” of trade relations with China. Back then, China was still a growing importer of European steel; today, Europe is increasingly dependent on imports from China and other Asian producers. Julius highlighted this structural shift as one of the major challenges facing the European industry, alongside rising global overcapacity and declining domestic production.

To maintain competitiveness, Julius called for a more assertive European trade policy, improved energy strategies, and stronger focus on sustainability and innovation.

Carlo Thelen, Director General of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the role of digitalization and AI technologies in improving efficiency across the distribution chain—from logistics optimization to emissions tracking. He stressed the need for integrated systems and agile business models to support Europe’s green transformation goals.

Several speakers also addressed the skills gap in the sector. Thelen noted that both upskilling existing workers and attracting younger talent will be essential to ensuring long-term resilience. Education and training programs must adapt to the digital and technological demands of the evolving industry.

Concerns about industrial sovereignty and Europe’s vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions were also raised. Speakers advocated for coordinated strategies to strengthen the European industrial base and maintain autonomy in critical sectors.

EUROMETAL’s history was presented as a reflection of broader European developments—from post-war reconstruction in the 1950s to today’s focus on digital transformation and climate policy. Over 75 years, the organization has served as a key platform for collaboration across steel service centers, stockists, traders, and distributors.

The anniversary event underscored EUROMETAL’s ongoing role in shaping the industry’s strategic direction and fostering dialogue in a time of rapid change.
