FERALPI STAHL continues EUR 220 million expansion programme in Riesa

by David Fleschen

One year after commissioning its new spooler rolling mill, FERALPI STAHL is continuing to expand production capacity at its Riesa site in Germany. The company plans to increase annual steel production from around one million tonnes to up to 1.3 million tonnes in the coming years.

The expansion is linked to the ongoing ramp-up of the new spooler rolling mill, which was officially inaugurated in May 2025 and is designed to produce steel products for automated applications.

Spooler mill ramp-up progressing as planned

According to FERALPI STAHL, the new rolling mill is currently operating in two-shift production, while performance testing with plant supplier Danieli is continuing. The company aims to achieve final acceptance certification for the facility during the summer.

“We created the conditions to bring our production to a new level with the new spooler rolling mill,” said Uwe Reinecke, General Manager of FERALPI STAHL. “The ramp-up is progressing according to plan, product quality is stable, and we can see that the new product is gaining traction in the market.”

Dariusz Sosin, Director for Production, Maintenance, Technology and Plant Logistics, added that the plant is already delivering the targeted material properties and increasingly stable process performance.

Capacity expected to reach 1.3 million tonnes

FERALPI STAHL already operates an existing rolling mill in Riesa with annual production of around 850,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel. The new spooler mill is expected to contribute an additional 400,000 to 450,000 tonnes of annual production capacity once fully ramped up.

The company said the transition to three-shift operation from 2027 is expected to support the planned capacity increase, subject to market demand and further investments in scrap processing infrastructure.

Part of EUR 220 million investment programme

The spooler rolling mill forms part of a broader investment programme by the Feralpi Group worth more than EUR 220 million at the Riesa site. In addition to expanding rolling capacity, the programme also includes investments in scrap processing, energy systems and infrastructure.

According to the company, the new spooler mill operates with Scope 1 emission-free technology and uses inductive processes designed to improve energy efficiency.

The Feralpi Group, headquartered in Italy, is one of Europe’s leading steel producers and specialises in steels for construction and special applications.
