Global crude steel production down 1.6% in September 2025

World crude steel production for the 70 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 141.8 million tonnes (Mt) in September 2025, marking a 1.6% decrease compared with September 2024.

  • Africa: 2.0 Mt (+8.2%)

  • Asia & Oceania: 102.9 Mt (–2.1%)

  • European Union (27): 10.1 Mt (–4.5%)

  • Other Europe: 3.6 Mt (+1.4%)

  • Middle East: 4.6 Mt (+9.3%)

  • North America: 8.8 Mt (+1.8%)

  • Russia & other CIS + Ukraine: 6.2 Mt (–5.3%)

  • South America: 3.5 Mt (–2.7%)

Total production for January–September 2025 reached 1,373.8 Mt, also down 1.6% year-on-year.

  2. India – 13.6 Mt (+13.2%)

  3. United States – 6.9 Mt (+6.7%)

Key trends

Global steel output in September remained broadly subdued, reflecting continued weakness in Asia and parts of Europe. India stood out as the fastest-growing major producer, while China’s production decline of nearly 5% weighed heavily on global totals.
