GMH Group joins Science Based Targets Initiative advancing climate goals
by David Fleschen
The GMH Group has announced its membership in the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), marking a significant step in the company's journey toward climate neutrality by 2039. The SBTi will support and document GMH’s efforts to achieve “net-zero” emissions, offering a transparent and scientifically validated framework.
The SBTi is a collaboration involving the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Its goal is to help companies set and achieve climate targets that align with efforts to limit global warming and avoid severe climate impacts. By joining the initiative, GMH Group commits to a rigorous validation process for its climate goals and aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to Dr. Alexander Becker, CEO of GMH Group, participating in the SBTi represents a strategic move that reinforces the company’s commitment to combating climate change. “The SBTi allows us to pursue our climate objectives more systematically and transparently,” Dr. Becker stated. He highlighted that GMH’s strategy focuses on reducing emissions from direct operations (Scope 1), energy use (Scope 2), and emissions throughout the supply chain (Scope 3). “We carefully select suppliers committed to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and require them to document and report their planned CO2 reductions transparently,” Dr. Becker explained. He also emphasized GMH’s dedication to supporting its customers with low-emission steel products for a more sustainable future.
The GMH Group has set a target to produce climate-neutral steel by 2039. The company transitioned to electric arc furnace steelmaking 30 years ago, which reduced CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional blast furnace production. By 2030, GMH aims to halve its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions and reduce Scope 3 emissions, including those from upstream and downstream activities, by 27.5%. Achieving these goals involves a strategic roadmap that relies heavily on partnerships across the supply chain.
As a leader in sustainable steel production in Germany, GMH continues to expand its range of low-emission steel under various “Green Steel” standards. The company is also transitioning from fossil-based energy sources to renewable electricity and biogenic coal. A key element of GMH’s CO2 reduction strategy is preparing for hydrogen-based industrial processes. To this end, the company is upgrading its furnaces and production systems to be hydrogen-ready, aiming to implement H2-enabled operations as soon as stable hydrogen supplies become available.
Since 2022, GMH Group has been a member of the “Association of Climate Protection Companies,” a nationwide coalition of industry leaders in climate protection and energy efficiency. By joining the SBTi, GMH has elevated its commitment to international transparency and action. The initiative has attracted more than 9,000 companies globally, highlighting the critical role of emissions-intensive sectors in the collective effort to combat climate change.
