Grundfos partners with Outokumpu to reduce emissions across supply chain
by David Fleschen

Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu and Danish water solutions provider Grundfos have announced a new partnership aimed at reducing carbon emissions across Grundfos' global supply chain. As part of the agreement, Grundfos will adopt Circle Green®, Outokumpu’s low-carbon stainless steel, for the majority of its standard material needs.
According to Outokumpu, Circle Green® offers up to 93% lower carbon emissions compared to the global industry average for stainless steel production. The transition is set to begin immediately, with around 90% of the stainless steel used in Grundfos’ manufacturing expected to be Circle Green® by the end of this year.
Supporting Climate Targets Through Supply Chain Innovation
The collaboration aligns with both companies’ climate strategies and contributes to broader efforts to decarbonize European industry. The move supports Grundfos’ goal to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and further decarbonize its supply chain. It also aligns with the European Union’s broader objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
“Stainless steel plays a crucial role in advancing clean energy and water infrastructure,” said Jörg Müller, Head of Sales for Stainless Europe at Outokumpu. “By supplying Grundfos with Circle Green®, we are enabling a significant step forward in sustainable manufacturing and helping a key player in water technology reduce its overall emissions.”
Addressing Global Water and Climate Challenges
Grundfos develops pumping systems and water technologies designed to improve energy and water efficiency. With climate change and urbanization contributing to growing global water stress, these technologies are increasingly important in efforts to conserve and reuse water.
“Partnering with Outokumpu on low-emission materials is a key milestone in our decarbonization journey,” said Ulrik Gernow, Chief Operating Officer at Grundfos. “This collaboration helps us lower our environmental footprint and supports our customers in doing the same.”
Focus on Long-Term Sustainability
Both companies have committed to Science-Based Targets (SBTs) and are focused on reducing emissions throughout their value chains. Outokumpu’s Circle Green® is produced using renewable electricity and other process improvements aimed at minimizing environmental impact.
The partnership represents a broader trend of industrial collaboration to address sustainability challenges and reduce the climate impact of critical infrastructure sectors like water management and manufacturing.
