GSM Tanzania orders Danieli rebar and wire rod mill for new steel plant

GSM Tanzania Limited has awarded Danieli a contract for a new 300,000-tonne-per-year rebar and wire rod mill at the Kilimanjaro Industrial Park in Tanzania.

The investment is intended to expand GSM’s position in the East African steel market and meet growing regional demand from construction and infrastructure projects.

The mill will process 150 x 150 mm billets at rates of up to 50 tonnes per hour. Its product range will include deformed reinforcing bars with diameters from 8 to 32 mm and smooth wire rod from 5.5 to 6.5 mm.

Danieli to supply complete rolling technology

Danieli’s scope includes the complete rolling mill technology package, with 14 cartridge-type GCC stands, a ten-pass BGV finishing block, an in-line quenching and tempering system and a twin-channel high-speed delivery system for the rebar cooling bed.

The wire rod line will feature an in-line QTR system as well as Danieli’s oil-film bearing laying head and a cooling conveyor. Danieli Automation will provide the plant control systems.

According to Danieli, the mill has been designed to combine competitive production costs and lower energy consumption with consistent finished-product quality.

The contract was signed during a visit by GSM management to Danieli’s headquarters in Italy. The companies said the project could also provide a basis for further cooperation in steelmaking and downstream processing.
