Jingye orders SMS upgrade for high-speed wire rod line in Yingkou
by David Fleschen
Jingye (Yingkou) Medium Plate Co. Ltd. has awarded SMS group a contract to modernise the No.1 high-speed wire rod line at its Yingkou plant, expanding the facility’s product range and rolling performance.
The upgrade will extend the line’s product spectrum to smooth rounds with diameters of 5–25 mm and rebar sizes of 6–16 mm. The modernised line will be capable of processing a wide range of specialty steel grades, including high-carbon steels, tire cord, welding wire, cold-heading, spring, tool, bearing and free-cutting steels.
According to SMS group, the revamped line is designed for a benchmark rolling speed of up to 115 metres per second, potentially setting a new performance benchmark for wire rod mills in China.
The project includes the installation of an eight-stand finishing block and a four-stand MEERdrive®PLUS sizing block. The finishing block features a twist-free rolling configuration designed to improve dimensional precision and surface quality. Tungsten carbide roll rings will be used to increase tool life and enable rapid changeovers.
The MEERdrive®PLUS sizing block uses an independent drive concept in which each stand is powered by its own motor, allowing flexible speed control and optimized rolling programs for different grades and sizes.
In addition to equipment supply, SMS group will provide process optimisation support, operational training and technical services. Spare parts will be supplied through a local warehouse in Shanghai, supported by a dedicated service team.
Commissioning of the upgraded wire rod line is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The project continues the cooperation between Jingye and SMS group, which began in 2012 with the installation of four parallel high-speed wire rod lines at the Yingkou site.
