Kalyani Ispat Ltd., a subsidiary of Rungta Sons, has awarded SMS group a contract to supply a new high-speed bar and wire rod mill for its Rajnandgaon plant in Chhattisgarh, India. The project is positioned as a step toward lower-emission long product production, using an energy-efficient process route based on induction heating instead of conventional reheating furnaces.

The new mill, scheduled for commissioning in the third quarter of 2026, will have an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes of construction steel products. It will produce rebar in diameters from 8 to 40 millimetres and wire rod in sizes from 5.5 to 20 millimetres, targeting rising demand from India’s construction and infrastructure sectors.

A key feature of the plant concept is the direct use of 130 mm square, 12-metre-long billets from the existing casters, heated by induction. By eliminating reheating furnaces, the process is designed to reduce both energy consumption and carbon emissions while improving overall efficiency.

SMS group’s scope of supply includes a ten-pass finishing block, a new crop and dividing shear and a high-speed delivery (HSD®) system. The rebar line is designed for rolling speeds of up to 45 metres per second, supported by newly developed water boxes for bar quenching, which are intended to improve mechanical properties and reduce the need for costly alloying additions. The wire rod line, designed for speeds of up to 100 metres per second, will feature pinch rolls, a laying head and an LCC® loop cooling conveyor, as well as an automated coil handling system.

The mill will also be equipped with SMS group’s drive and automation systems, enabling fully automated operation from billet entry through to finished bar and coil handling, supported by digital diagnostics and process optimisation tools.

“This partnership underscores the trust industry leaders place in SMS group’s advanced high-speed mill technology. Our mission extends beyond supplying equipment—we deliver a competitive edge through enhanced productivity, energy efficiency, and sustainability,” said Bernhard Steenken, CSO, APAC & MEA, SMS group.
