Marcegaglia has signed a letter of intent with French energy provider EDF to secure a long-term supply of nuclear-generated electricity for its steel production site in Fos-sur-Mer. The agreement outlines plans for electricity delivery over a minimum period of 10 years and is set to be formalized with a supply contract later this year.

The Fos-sur-Mer site, acquired by Marcegaglia in June 2024, is undergoing a significant transformation involving over €750 million in investment. The project includes the installation of new electric arc furnace capacity, a continuous slab casting facility, and a modern hot rolling mill. The site's annual production capacity is expected to increase from 150,000 tons to 2.1 million tons, with the potential to reach 2.5 million tons. Initial operations are planned to begin in mid-2028.

Classified by the French government as a project of national interest, the initiative aims to support both industrial competitiveness and climate goals by incorporating low-carbon energy into heavy industry processes.

Antonio and Emma Marcegaglia emphasized the significance of the agreement for the group’s broader sustainability strategy, stating that the use of carbon-free, stable, and competitive electricity from nuclear sources marks a strategic step toward decarbonization in sectors with high energy demands.

The signing ceremony in Paris brought together Antonio Marcegaglia, Chairman of Marcegaglia Steel, Marc Benayoun, EDF Executive Director for Customers and Regions, and Bernard Fontana, Chairman and CEO of EDF.

French Minister for Industry and Energy, Marc Ferracci, welcomed the agreement as a forward-looking initiative that reinforces industrial resilience and long-term environmental commitments.
