Megasa awards Danieli contract to modernize rolling mill in Portugal
by David Fleschen
Spanish steel producer Megasa Siderúrgica has awarded Danieli a contract to modernize the rolling mill at its Siderúrgica Nacional (SN) Seixal plant in Portugal. The facility has an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes and manufactures bars, spooled products and wire rod.
The modernization project aims to improve product quality, process efficiency and operational reliability through upgrades to billet heating, rolling equipment and automation.
New induction heating system to improve temperature control
The first stage of the project involves installing a Danieli Q-HEAT induction heating system with three coils and a total installed power of 6 MW.
The equipment will compensate for temperature losses during billet transfer from the reheating furnace to the first rolling stand, particularly during welding operations.
By equalizing temperatures along the billet length, the system is designed to improve product consistency and mechanical properties.
Rolling stands and automation to be upgraded
The modernization also includes modifications to the intermediate rolling mill section. Danieli will supply four new cantilever ESS rolling stands and rearrange the existing layout to simplify roll pass design, streamline production and improve operational safety.
In addition, Danieli Automation will replace the current automation platform with a new Level 2 process control system.
The upgraded system will improve material tracking throughout the production process, from billet charging to the discharge of finished products across the mill's different finishing lines.
According to Danieli, the new automation technology will support more effective process control and production management.
Commissioning scheduled for third quarter of 2027
Start-up of the modernized facilities is planned for the third quarter of 2027.
The project continues a partnership between Megasa and Danieli spanning more than five decades, with the SN Seixal plant playing an important role in their cooperation.
The investment is intended to strengthen the plant's production capabilities while improving the efficiency and reliability of its existing rolling operations.
