Metso: €45 million to expand mining service network in South America

by David Fleschen

Mining technology supplier Metso has invested around €45 million over the past two years to expand and modernise its service network in South America, responding to growing mining activity and demand for critical minerals in the region.

The investments cover facilities in Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina and are intended to increase repair and maintenance capacity while bringing technical services closer to major mining operations.

Metso, a Finland-based supplier of technologies and services to the mining, aggregates and metals industries, has a substantial installed base in South America, with around 20,000 Metso units currently in operation across the region.

New service centre planned in Brazil

The latest investment is a new service facility in Minas Gerais, Brazil, one of the country's most important mining regions. Located near Belo Horizonte, the centre is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028.

Metso said its existing service hub in Sorocaba is operating at full capacity, while increasing mining activity is generating additional demand for maintenance and repair services. The new facility is expected to reduce transportation distances and improve response times for mining customers.

Earlier investments include expanded service capabilities in Antofagasta, Chile, and Parauapebas, Brazil, as well as a new facility in Arequipa, Peru. Metso also opened an office in San Juan, Argentina, during the second quarter of 2026 and plans further investment in service and technical-support infrastructure in the country.

The expanded facilities will be capable of servicing newer Metso technologies, including repairs of HRC grinding equipment.

"South America is a key market for Metso. We have a strong installed base with around 20,000 Metso units in operation and customers’ ongoing investments continue to support growing demand for services," said Heikki Metsälä, President of Metso's Services business area.

Around 3,000 employees across the region

Beyond its service centres, Metso's South American operations include production of rubber and Poly-Met wear parts, foundry activities, pump assembly, manufacturing of screening and crushing equipment and a dedicated performance centre.

Around 3,000 Metso employees currently serve customers across South America. The company said the combination of local manufacturing, technical support, testing, R&D and lifecycle services is intended to strengthen its position in the region's mining and aggregates markets.

The expansion comes as South America remains a major global source of minerals required by the steel, energy and other industrial sectors, increasing the importance of equipment availability and efficient mineral processing operations.
