Metso secures €16 million mill order for Sweden’s Viscaria copper mine

Finnish technology group Metso has been awarded a contract to supply two horizontal grinding mills to the newly reopened Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna, northern Sweden.

The order, valued at approximately €16 million, was placed by mine operator Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria and booked in Metso’s Minerals segment orders for the first quarter of 2026.

Once fully operational, the Viscaria project is expected to produce around 26,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year, positioning it as Sweden’s second-largest copper producer and a strategically important supplier to the European market.

Metso will deliver Select™ pre-engineered SAG (semi-autogenous) and ball mills as part of its Metso Plus portfolio. The standardized equipment package is designed to simplify procurement and accelerate project execution – a key advantage for mine restart projects such as Viscaria.

According to Metso, the Select mill concept offers shorter delivery times, lower project costs, and more predictable implementation compared with fully customized installations. The mills feature conservative design parameters and robust components to ensure high reliability, availability, and energy-efficient operation under demanding conditions.

The reopening of the Viscaria mine is considered an important development for Europe’s domestic supply of critical raw materials, particularly as the region seeks to reduce dependence on imported copper for electrification and green transition projects.

Metso is one of the world’s leading suppliers of minerals processing equipment and has delivered more than 8,000 grinding mills globally, including some of the largest SAG/AG and ball mill installations currently in operation.

The latest order further strengthens the company’s presence in the Nordic mining sector and underlines growing investment activity in European base metals projects.
