Metso secures major equipment order for iron ore project in Oman

Finnish industrial equipment manufacturer Metso has been awarded a significant contract to supply process equipment for a new iron ore concentrator plant to be built in Sohar, Oman. The project, developed by China’s Jinnan Iron & Steel Group, is expected to begin operations in 2027 and will produce approximately 12.6 million tonnes of high-grade iron ore concentrate annually.
Located around 200 kilometers north of Muscat, the plant is part of Oman’s broader strategy to expand its mining sector and establish itself as a key player in the global market for Direct Reduction (DR) grade iron ore — a product essential for lower-emission steelmaking processes.
Metso’s scope of delivery includes critical equipment for both the grinding and beneficiation circuits of the plant. The grinding section will be equipped with several Vertimill® VTM-4500 mills and ball mills featuring metallic liners, totaling about 25 megawatts of installed power. For the beneficiation process, Metso will supply five HRT High Rate Thickeners with Reactorwell™ technology and six Larox® FFP3512 filters for concentrate dewatering. A comprehensive slurry pump package, including Metso MD series mill discharge pumps, will support material transport throughout the plant.
Many of the components to be delivered are part of Metso’s Metso Plus portfolio, which offers advanced services and digital solutions. While the value of the order was not disclosed, it has been booked in Metso’s Minerals segment for the second quarter of 2025.
“This project marks Jinnan’s first investment in Oman, a country with significant mineral resources and a clear strategy to diversify its economy through mining,” said Piia Karhu, President of Metso’s Minerals business. “We are pleased to support this effort by providing our technology and expertise to help ensure the success of this greenfield development.”
