Metso to supply energy-efficient comminution equipment for gold project in Tanzania
by David Fleschen

Metso has secured an order from Sotta Mining Corporation Ltd., an 80%-owned subsidiary of Perseus Mining Limited, to supply comminution equipment for the Nyanzaga gold project in northwest Tanzania. The order includes a Superior™ MKIII 4265 primary gyratory crusher and two Metso Plus Premier™ grinding mills with a combined installed power of 21MW. The contract is valued at over EUR 20 million and was recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment orders for the first quarter of 2025.
The new equipment aims to improve operational efficiency and energy performance at the Nyanzaga site. “Perseus is looking forward to the successful deployment of Metso’s state-of-the-art comminution technology, alleviating gearboxes with the benefits of precision control and high efficiency,” said Matt Cavedon, General Manager of Project Development at Perseus Mining.
The Premier™ SAG mill and ball mill feature low-speed synchronous motor drives, eliminating the need for traditional gearboxes. According to Oskar Gustavson, Technology Director for Grinding at Metso, this design delivers a 2% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional mills. Both mills will also utilize Metso’s Polymer Hydrostatic Shoe Bearing systems, enhancing reliability and lowering maintenance costs.
Metso’s Premier™ horizontal grinding mills are engineered to provide customizable, high-performance solutions based on advanced technology and process expertise. The company also offers Select™ pre-engineered grinding mills, mill reline equipment, a variety of liner options—including the Megaliner™—and comprehensive services such as inspection programs, Life Cycle Services (LCS) contracts, and a complete range of spare and wear parts.
