Oryx Stainless Opens New Flagship Facility in Johor, Malaysia

by David Fleschen

The Oryx Stainless Group, a global company specializing in the trade and processing of raw materials for stainless steel production, has officially opened its new facility in Johor, Malaysia. This marks the company’s first greenfield investment in Southeast Asia and represents a strategic step toward advancing the circular economy in the region.

In its initial phase, the state-of-the-art plant is designed to process up to 150,000 tonnes of stainless steel scrap annually. The facility aims to support carbon emissions reduction and resource conservation efforts across Southeast Asia. According to the company, the plant could help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to one million tonnes per year.

The opening ceremony was attended by over 200 guests, including Johor’s Chief Minister, YAB Dato' Onn Hafiz Bin Ghazi, along with other government officials, diplomats, media representatives, and business partners from around the world.

“Our investment in Johor brings us closer to the centers of Asian steel production and reflects our long-term commitment to partnership, green growth, and shared value creation,” said Tobias Kämmer, CEO of Oryx Stainless Holding.

The new facility aligns with Malaysia’s national climate targets, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and attracting RM300 billion in green investments by the end of the decade. The plant's recycling operations are expected to play a significant role in meeting these goals.

Stainless steel is known for its high recyclability, with up to 90 percent of the material capable of being reused without quality loss. Oryx Stainless applies a specialized process that includes individual scrap analysis, quality-based sorting, and the creation of tailored raw material blends for more than 150 stainless steel alloy types used globally. This reduces reliance on primary raw materials like ferronickel and ferrochromium, which have a high carbon footprint.

In addition to its environmental contributions, the facility also serves as a platform for skills development and knowledge transfer. Local employees were trained in Thailand to operate the plant’s specialized equipment—among them, the first Sennebogen scrap handlers ever imported into Malaysia. The workforce is expected to double by mid-2026, comprised almost entirely of skilled Malaysian professionals.

Oryx Stainless has also established partnerships with Malaysian universities and educational institutions to support engineering education and career development for young talent.

With existing operations in Thailand and across Europe, Oryx Stainless serves stainless steel producers worldwide and maintains a broad, international supply base. The group’s new Malaysian subsidiary, Oryx Stainless Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., is located in Pasir Gudang, Johor.
