Peter Brennan takes over UK Steel leadership amid industry challenges
by David Fleschen
UK Steel has appointed Peter Brennan as its new Director-General, succeeding Gareth Stace, who is stepping down after 12 years leading the British steel industry trade association. Stace will remain as an adviser for a short transition period before leaving the organisation.
Brennan previously worked on UK Steel's policy and advocacy activities, particularly efforts to protect domestic steelmakers against global overcapacity and subsidised imports. Before joining the association, he worked as a steel market analyst and journalist at Platts and subsequently covered macroeconomics and capital markets at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Steel strategy and competitiveness challenges
Brennan takes over as the UK government seeks to reverse decades of declining domestic steel production through its Steel Strategy. The policy aims to increase the share of British steel demand supplied by domestic producers and encourage investment in the sector.
Key challenges include high industrial electricity prices, global steel overcapacity, trade defence measures and public procurement policies.
“This is a hugely important moment for our sector. After decades of decline, we now have a real opportunity to rebuild UK steelmaking, increase domestic production and unlock major new investment,” Brennan said.
He emphasised that achieving these objectives would require closer cooperation between government and industry to address longstanding competitiveness problems.
Gareth Stace steps down after 12 years
Stace has led UK Steel since 2015, overseeing the association during a period marked by the closure of Redcar steelworks, Brexit, successive steel industry crises, rising energy costs and major government interventions in individual steel companies.
During his tenure, UK Steel advocated changes to energy policy, trade defence mechanisms, public procurement and support for industrial decarbonisation.
Stace said the industry now faces an opportunity to reverse its long-term decline and expressed confidence in his successor.
“Peter knows this industry inside out and will be a formidable champion for it,” he said.
The leadership change comes as British steelmakers face important investment decisions and continued pressure to improve competitiveness while transitioning towards lower-emission production.
