Shougang Jingtang commissions SMS to supply new continuous galvanizing line

Shougang Jingtang has awarded SMS group a contract to deliver a new continuous galvanizing line (CGL) at its facility in Caofeidian, China. The new plant will focus on producing high-quality galvanized steel for automotive applications and is designed to reach an annual output of 450,000 tons. With this project, Shougang aims to further strengthen its position in the domestic automotive steel market.

The line will be engineered for high-speed production, processing strip thicknesses from 0.4 to 2.3 millimeters and widths ranging from 900 to 1,900 millimeters. Operating speeds will reach up to 180 meters per minute. SMS group’s scope of supply includes engineering, mechanical equipment, electrics, and automation systems.

To meet stringent surface quality requirements, the CGL will feature a FOEN air-knife system for precise control of zinc coating thickness, as well as a DUMA-BANDZINK electrostatic oiling machine to complete the surface treatment process. These systems are designed to ensure consistent and high-quality results in line with automotive industry standards.

Central to the plant’s operation will be SMS group’s X-Pact One Pulpit, an integrated control platform that allows operators to monitor and control the entire production line from a central location. The setup includes large-format displays and line-mounted cameras to enable real-time process visibility and decision-making.

The automation package includes full X-Pact level 1 and level 2 systems, along with smart sensors, measuring devices, and robotic support for key stages of the process. A dedicated drive system tailored to Shougang Jingtang’s production requirements will ensure precise strip guidance, stable elongation, and consistent mechanical properties at high throughput rates.

The collaboration builds on a long-standing partnership between the two companies. SMS group installed the first continuous annealing line (CAL) for Shougang Jingtang in 2007. The new CGL will be the eighth strip processing line supplied by SMS for the Caofeidian location and is scheduled to go into operation by mid-2027.
