SMS Group delivers high-efficiency HybrEx extrusion line to Hydro Gainesville

by David Fleschen

Hydro Extrusion North America has selected SMS group and its subsidiary OMAV to supply a new HybrEx® extrusion line for its Gainesville facility. The eight-inch, 25-meganewton line is designed to enhance production efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The HybrEx® press features hybrid drive technology that reduces energy consumption by over 30 percent compared to conventional systems. It also significantly lowers hydraulic oil usage by eliminating traditional oil tanks and high-temperature cylinders, contributing to safer and more stable operations.

A key innovation is SMS group’s fully electrical scrap shear, which creates an oil-free hot zone to improve safety and minimize environmental impact. Its self-adjusting function ensures clean, precise cuts and reduces wear, extending equipment lifespan.

Safety was a central focus in the design process. “At Hydro, we are committed to modernizing our operations with equipment that improves our safety, efficiency, and capacity,” said Ralph Westphal, Vice President and General Manager of Hydro Extrusion North America’s South and East regions.

Massimo Marinelli, CEO of OMAV, noted, “By combining SMS group’s technological leadership with OMAV’s automation expertise, we have delivered a future-proof solution that meets Hydro’s high standards.”
