SMS Group launches TÜV-certified platform for real-time CO₂ tracking
by David Fleschen

SMS group has introduced Viridis Carbon, a TÜV-certified digital platform designed to deliver real-time insights into carbon emissions across industrial operations. The system enables manufacturers to monitor and manage their corporate and product carbon footprints (CCF and PCF) with precision, supporting both regulatory compliance and sustainability targets.
As part of SMS group’s broader green metals portfolio, Viridis Carbon offers data-driven transparency based on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and ISO 14067 standards. It captures emissions data from across the entire production chain – from factory-wide systems down to specific units such as motors, pumps, and auxiliary equipment – helping companies document, analyze, and verify their environmental impact in real time.
“The metals industry is under growing pressure to demonstrate emissions accountability,” said Thiago Maia, Executive Vice President for Automation, Digital, and Service Solutions at SMS group. “With Viridis Carbon, we are making sustainability measurable and transparent. Our solution empowers companies to meet legal requirements and actively contribute to reducing their carbon footprint.”
By integrating operational data with standardized emissions factors, Viridis Carbon enables continuous tracking of scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This allows users to identify emission hotspots, link them to production data, and implement targeted reduction strategies. The platform also supports traceability and documentation, reducing the risks of disputes or regulatory non-compliance.
The platform’s TÜV Rheinland certification underscores its credibility and value in a regulated market. It equips companies to comply with frameworks such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), while also positioning them for green investment opportunities and greater product differentiation in sustainability-conscious markets.
One recent adopter is Swiss Steel Group, where Viridis Carbon has been implemented as part of a broader drive toward more efficient and transparent steel production. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainable industrial practices and highlights the practical benefits of real-time emissions management.
