by David Fleschen

SMS group has announced a definitive agreement to acquire key technologies from Metso Corporation’s metals business, marking a strategic expansion of its portfolio focused on sustainable metal and mineral processing. The transaction, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026 pending regulatory approvals, includes agglomeration and calcination technologies previously offered under Metso’s Outotec brand.
Metso, a global provider of technology and services for the aggregates, minerals processing, and metals refining industries, will transfer select technologies and related service operations to SMS group. This includes sintering, traveling grate pelletizing, and fluidized bed technologies, which are seen as complementary to SMS group’s existing solutions aimed at decarbonizing the steel industry.
“The integration of these technologies supports our goal of becoming a leading partner in the green transformation of the metals industry,” said Thomas Hansmann, Chief Technology Officer at SMS group.
As part of the transaction, approximately 180 employees across Germany, India, China, and other international locations are expected to join SMS group, further enhancing its global capabilities in sustainable steel production.
The acquisition underscores SMS group’s commitment to advancing low-emission technologies and expanding its service portfolio for the evolving demands of the metals sector.
