SMS Group to deliver fully automated stainless steel tube extrusion line

by David Fleschen

Japanese stainless steel tube manufacturer Maruichi Stainless Tube Co. Ltd. has awarded SMS group the contract to supply a highly automated, fully integrated extrusion line for the production of seamless stainless steel tubes. The new facility, located at a greenfield site in Shimonoseki, will feature cutting-edge technology and significantly extend Maruichi’s product range and production efficiency.

At the heart of the project is a 50-meganewton horizontal extrusion press, more than doubling the extrusion force of the company’s current 20-MN line. This major capacity upgrade will enable Maruichi to produce a broader dimensional range of stainless steel tubes, targeting growing global demand across a variety of industrial sectors.

Fully electrified and digitally optimized

SMS group will deliver the complete process line, including:

  • Electrified billet heating systems: horizontal preheating, intermediate reheating before piercing, and final reheating before extrusion

  • A next-generation horizontal extrusion press for extruding pre-pierced billets

  • A water quench system, run-out table, and expansion press for final shaping

  • Full automation and process control, powered by SMS’s MIDIS platform (Management Information Diagnostic Indication System)

This advanced configuration ensures maximum energy efficiency, precise temperature control, and seamless process integration. MIDIS enables real-time data analysis, remote diagnostics, and continuous process optimization, helping to secure consistent product quality while meeting stringent JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) requirements.

Project timeline and certification

Construction of the production building is scheduled for completion by late 2026, followed by equipment installation. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2027, following successful JIS certification. “The collaboration between SMS group and Maruichi sets a new benchmark in stainless steel tube production,” said Toru Tsunakawa, Managing Director of SMS group K.K.
“By combining precision engineering, full automation and smart process control, this project will help shape the future of stainless steel tube manufacturing. We are proud to support Maruichi on this strategic expansion.”
