SMS group to modernize rolling mill for Winjoy's copper strip expansion
by David Fleschen
SMS group has received an order from Zhejiang Winjoy New Material Co., Ltd. to modernize a pre-owned six-high reversing cold rolling mill and convert it into a 1,250 mm-wide six-high CVC® plus breakdown mill for copper strip production in China.
The project will be implemented at Winjoy's facility in the Hangzhou Bay Economic Development Zone in Shaoxing City and includes the supply of upgraded mechanical and electrical equipment packages.
Former tinplate mill to be converted for copper production
Originally commissioned in 1988 as a tinplate mill, the former Demag installation will be transformed into a high-performance copper rolling mill with an annual production capacity of around 100,000 tonnes.
The modernized mill will process copper and copper alloy strip with entry thicknesses of up to 20 mm and final gauges down to 0.5 mm in widths ranging from 600 mm to 1,150 mm. SMS group will equip the mill with its CVC® plus flatness control technology and optimized cooling systems for rolling oil.
According to SMS, the upgraded facility will enable Winjoy to broaden its product portfolio, particularly for wider copper strip used in the electronics, new energy vehicle and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Partnership expands following earlier orders
The latest project builds on an existing collaboration between the two companies. In June 2025, SMS group received orders from Winjoy for two 650 mm-wide six-high CVC® finishing mills.
Winjoy Chairman Wang Jianli said: "SMS group’s technical expertise and equipment capabilities are widely recognized, and we look forward to continuing to deepen our future cooperation based on mutual trust and mutual benefit. We are confident that, with the support of SMS group, Winjoy will achieve even greater success."
Peter Langner, CEO of SMS group China, added: "Today’s signing is more than a contract. It is the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership in copper rolling technology. With two finishing mills already in order, and now this major upgrade project, Winjoy and SMS are jointly building one of the most advanced copper strip production lines in China."
Extending asset life through modernization
SMS group says the project demonstrates how existing rolling assets can be upgraded with modern process and automation technology to extend their service life, improve production flexibility and provide a more sustainable alternative to entirely new installations.
