SMS group wins orders for two large-scale pelletizing plants in China

SMS group has secured two contracts to supply large-scale travelling grate pelletizing plants for Jinan Steel Group companies in China’s Hebei province, with a combined annual capacity of 5.1 million tonnes.

The plants will be installed at Ganglu Iron and Steel in Tangshan, with capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per year, and Jinan Iron and Steel in Wu’An, with capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per year. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2027.

New cooling technology for Chinese market

The projects will mark the first deployment in China of SMS group’s optimized thermal cooling system. According to the technology supplier, the system recirculates off-gas and can reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% and plant off-gas volumes by more than 30%.

SMS Agglomeration will supply the core travelling grate technology and its Pretium control system for both plants. The digital system is designed to support process control and optimise production, energy consumption, emissions and plant availability.

Beijing Shougang International Engineering Technology (BSIET) will serve as EPC contractor. SMS said the delivery period for the projects has been shortened to 11 months.

The investments are intended to provide more efficient and reliable pellet production within the companies’ existing steelmaking operations while reducing energy consumption and emissions.

“These two large-scale travelling grate pelletizing projects [...] deliver efficient, reliable, and low-carbon pelletizing production platforms for our clients,” said Wu Liyun, Chairman of BSIET.

The contracts are also the first Chinese project wins for the agglomeration business since SMS Agglomeration became part of SMS group.
