SMS supports Thyssenkrupp in advancing electrical steel production

by David Fleschen

A new strip processing line for producing electrical steel is now operational at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe's Bochum site, marking a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing. Supplied by SMS Group, the line is designed to meet the growing demand for high-performance electrical steel, essential for energy-efficient applications like electromobility.

The facility, capable of processing 200,000 tons annually, produces non-grain-oriented (NGO) electrical steel, which features special magnetic properties and low core losses, making it ideal for motors and generators. The line processes materials with widths up to 1,350 millimeters and thicknesses from 0.20 to 1.00 millimeters, operating at speeds of up to 150 meters per minute.

SMS Group's technological expertise is central to the line's capabilities. The system integrates advanced furnace technology and coating solutions, including a patented rapid heating furnace from DREVER, and an automated coil transfer system from AMOVA. The annealing process ensures precise material properties, while the insulating varnish coating is applied in ultra-thin, uniform layers for optimal electrical performance.

"The successful commissioning of this state-of-the-art production line underscores the strong collaboration between our teams," said Dr. Harald Espenhahn of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe. "It enables us to meet evolving market demands and enhance energy efficiency."

Simone Scheidgen from SMS Group highlighted the fruitful partnership: "This project exemplifies our shared commitment to technological innovation and sustainability, helping create materials crucial for a sustainable future."
