SSAB selects PSI for digital renewal of production management systems

by David Fleschen

SSAB has chosen PSI to support its digital transformation efforts. The partnership aims to create a modern digital template for SSAB’s production processes, with the first implementation taking place at the Luleå mill in Sweden. This initiative is part of SSAB’s long-term plan to integrate automated and standardized processes across its operations. The project will also ensure that new business processes and systems are ready for the Luleå mill’s startup by the end of 2028.

At the Luleå site, the implementation will involve PSImetals solutions, including planning, scheduling, production execution (both solid and liquid phases), quality, and logistics. Additionally, it will feature a standardized Level-2 and Level-4 integration, covering the production cycle from scrap supply to finished goods. The goal is to harmonize SSAB’s processes while leveraging best-practice tools across the company.

"When we started looking for the right partner, we had a couple of criteria," said Niko Korte, Head of Fossil-Free Business Platforms at SSAB. "We needed the best experience, software dedicated to the steel industry, and standard processes that enable what we call the template approach. PSI ticked all of those boxes. Production digitalization is crucial for SSAB, especially as we build a greenfield mill. We aim to optimize data utilization for better process and predictive quality control, and it’s vital to have the right partners and tools for that change."

SSAB has set ambitious goals, including being the first company to offer fossil-free steel by 2026 and reducing carbon emissions significantly by 2030. The company’s collaboration with PSI is a key part of this strategy, as it seeks to modernize its production systems while improving energy efficiency.

PSI, a software company specializing in optimizing energy and material flows, brings decades of experience to the project. The company’s solutions, designed for both on-premises and cloud environments, combine AI with proven optimization techniques to support industries such as utilities and steelmaking in their sustainability efforts.
