Steel industry confronts decarbonisation challenges at Made in Steel 2025
by David Fleschen

As the Made in Steel 2025 conference concluded, industry leaders gathered to assess the progress and challenges facing the steel sector’s transition toward lower emissions. While significant strides have been made, participants acknowledged that economic pressures and geopolitical uncertainties are complicating the path forward.
The final-day conference, titled “Road to the future: decarbonising the European steel sector while remaining competitive,” highlighted the widespread commitment within the industry to addressing climate change. However, speakers noted that recent instability is delaying some companies’ planned investments in decarbonisation and could postpone legislative targets as businesses adapt to emerging priorities.
“Addressing the climate challenge is no longer a choice for the steel industry—it’s a necessity,” was the prevailing sentiment among experts at the event.
Despite these challenges, companies continue to pursue innovation and sustainability. As part of the closing session, GMH Gruppe, Trafilix Industries, and Marcegaglia were announced as the recipients of the Made in Steel Awards 2025. Presented by siderweb—the organiser of the conference and exhibition—the awards recognise exhibitors for excellence in communication, product and service presentation, and the sustainability of their exhibition designs.
Made in Steel 2025 brought together stakeholders from across the steel supply chain, fostering discussions on competitiveness, sustainability, and the technological advancements needed to support the sector’s decarbonisation journey.
