by David Fleschen

Stegra, the industrial scaleup driving sustainable steel production, has announced the appointment of Niklas Wass as Head of Operations in Boden, effective April 1, 2025. Wass brings over two decades of experience from stainless steelmaker Outokumpu, where he held several key leadership roles.

Wass most recently served as President of the Business Line Stainless Europe at Outokumpu. His previous positions include Executive Vice President of Operations for Business Area Europe, as well as leading operations at Outokumpu’s facilities in Tornio, Finland, and Degerfors, Sweden. With extensive expertise in electric arc furnace-based stainless steel production, Wass is regarded as a seasoned leader in the industry.

“Few people can match Niklas’ experience with electric arc furnace-based stainless steel operations. Beyond his technical expertise, his values align closely with what we seek in leadership at Stegra. He’s a great fit to build for the future and makes an already strong team even stronger. We are very glad to have him on board,” said Henrik Henriksson, CEO of Stegra.

Wass succeeds Markus Mannström, who will transition into a new role as Head of Transition Office at Stegra. In this capacity, Mannström will focus on coordinating and supporting the critical shift from the construction phase to the start of production at the Boden facility.

"Markus continues his great work for our project in Boden in a new role, which will be crucial in facilitating the start of production in our factory," Henriksson added.

Stegra began construction of its integrated plant for green hydrogen, green iron, and green steel in 2022. Significant progress has been made, with the foundations laid, the steel mill’s roof and walls under construction, and the first equipment installed. The facility will include Europe’s largest electrolyzer, with a capacity of 700 megawatts, to produce green hydrogen. The production of green steel is scheduled to begin in 2026.
