Tenova advances electrical steel processing project for JSW JFE in India

by David Fleschen

Tenova is progressing with the delivery of three processing lines for JSW JFE Electrical Steel's new grain-oriented electrical steel production facility in India. The contract, awarded in 2025, covers equipment for manufacturing high-efficiency electrical steel used in power transformers and electricity transmission networks.

The project aims to strengthen domestic production of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), a specialised material designed to minimise energy losses in transformer cores.

Three processing lines for electrical steel production

Under the contract, Tenova will supply three processing lines incorporating its proprietary technologies: an Annealing and Pickling Line (APL), a Flattening and Coating Line (FCL), and a Decarburizing and Coating Line (DCL).

The lines will support the production of electrical steel with improved magnetic properties and reduced core losses, contributing to higher transformer efficiency.

Grain-oriented electrical steel is particularly important for power transmission and distribution infrastructure, where minimising electrical losses is essential to improving energy efficiency.

The project builds on Tenova's existing activities in India's electrical steel sector, including the ongoing supply of two Decarburizing and Coating Lines for the Nashik plant.

Engineering work progresses in India

Engineering teams from Tenova and JSW JFE recently met in Bellary, India, to review technical interfaces, coordinate engineering activities and confirm project execution plans.

According to Tenova, the project is progressing according to schedule, although the company has not disclosed a commissioning date or the planned annual production capacity.

“This project represents a significant milestone for Tenova in the electrical steel sector and demonstrates our ability to deliver advanced processing technologies for strategic markets,” said Fabrizio Pere, Executive Vice President of Tenova's Downstream Business Unit.

Supporting India's transformer industry

JSW JFE Electrical Steel considers the investment an important step towards establishing domestic production of high-quality grain-oriented electrical steel.

Demand for the material is closely linked to investment in electricity networks, transformer manufacturing and the expansion of power infrastructure.

The new processing lines are intended to provide the technological basis for producing electrical steel grades suitable for high-efficiency transformers, supporting India's efforts to expand its domestic supply of specialised steel products.
