Tosyalı Algérie: global benchmark with record single-module DRI output in 2025

by David Fleschen

Tosyalı Algérie has set a new world record for direct reduced iron production, achieving 2.43 million tonnes from a single direct reduction module in 2025. The milestone was reached by the company’s second DRI module during its first full year of operation, establishing a new global benchmark for annual output from a single unit.

The performance was not an isolated result. Tosyalı Algérie’s first DRI module also delivered a strong year, ranking third worldwide in annual DRI production in 2025. Together, the results underline the scale and consistency of Tosyalı’s twin-DRI strategy and position the Algerian site among the largest DRI-based ironmaking complexes globally.

Both modules were supplied by Midrex Technologies together with consortium partner Paul Wurth, part of SMS group. The record-setting second module is a MIDREX® plant designed to produce both hot and cold DRI, providing high operational flexibility.

Commenting on the achievement, Tosyalı Holding Board Chairman Fuat Tosyalı said the group continues to expand DRI capacity in Algeria to deliver lower-carbon steel production. He noted that since 2020 the Tosyalı Algérie plant has broken global DRI production records every year and highlighted that the new module is capable of operating on natural gas and, with minor modification, 100% hydrogen. According to Tosyalı, the latest production record “confirms the success of our investment strategy focused on sustainability, efficiency, and scale” and strengthens the company’s position as a global green steel producer.

The second DRI module is integrated with a new electric arc furnace via a hot transport conveyor, enabling continuous charging of hot DRI and boosting melt shop productivity while reducing energy consumption and emissions. During EAF maintenance, the plant can switch to full-capacity cold DRI production, maximizing availability.

From the technology supplier side, KC Woody, President and CEO of Midrex Technologies, congratulated Tosyalı Algérie on reaching a new global benchmark in its first year of operation, describing the result as a demonstration of world-class operational excellence and the productivity and flexibility of MIDREX technology.

SMS group also highlighted the broader significance of the project. CTO Thomas Hansmann said the milestone reflects successful cooperation and supports both Algeria’s steelmaking capabilities and the industry’s decarbonization efforts.

Beyond the company level, the record strengthens Algeria’s role in the global steel industry, supporting the country’s transition from a net importer to an exporter of high-quality steel. Tosyalı’s continued investment in DRI-based ironmaking reduces reliance on scrap, increases production flexibility, and aligns with global efforts to lower the carbon footprint of steel production.

Tosyalı Algérie posts record 2.43 Mt DRI output from single module in 2025

Tosyalı Algérie has set a new world record for annual direct reduced iron production from a single module, reaching 2.43 million tonnes in 2025. The achievement was delivered by the company’s second DRI module in its first full year of operation, establishing a new global benchmark for single-module performance.

The result builds on a broader pattern of strong output at the Algerian site. Tosyalı Algérie’s first DRI module also ranked third worldwide for annual DRI production in 2025, underlining the scale and consistency of the company’s twin-DRI strategy.

Both modules were supplied by Midrex Technologies together with consortium partner Paul Wurth, part of SMS group. The record-setting second unit is a MIDREX® plant designed to produce both hot and cold DRI, giving Tosyalı Algérie high operational flexibility.

Commenting on the milestone, Tosyalı Holding Board Chairman Fuat Tosyalı said: “Since 2020, our Tosyalı Algérie plant has broken the world DRI production record every year.” He added that the strong 2025 performance of both modules “further confirm[s] the scale and consistency of our twin-DRI strategy.”

Tosyalı also highlighted the technology pathway behind the record. According to the group, the second DRI facility was “the first plant in the world to start commercial production with the capability of operating on both natural gas and—through a minor modification—100 percent hydrogen,” a feature that supports its long-term decarbonization strategy.

The second DRI module is directly linked to a new electric arc furnace via a hot transport conveyor, enabling continuous charging of hot DRI and increasing melt shop productivity while reducing energy use and emissions. During EAF outages, the plant can switch to full-capacity cold DRI production, maximizing availability.

From the technology supplier side, KC Woody, President and CEO of Midrex Technologies, said: “Reaching a new global benchmark so quickly is a powerful demonstration of Tosyalı’s world-class operational excellence and the best-in-class productivity, reliability, and flexibility of MIDREX Technology.”

SMS group also welcomed the result. CTO Thomas Hansmann said he was proud that SMS engineering expertise had contributed to a project that strengthens Algeria’s steelmaking capabilities and supports the industry’s decarbonization efforts.
