Mexican steel producer TYASA has awarded Primetals Technologies an order for a twin vacuum degassing (VD) plant for its steelworks in Ixtaczoquitlán. The new secondary metallurgy facility is scheduled to enter operation in October 2027.
Debottlenecking the meltshop
According to Primetals Technologies, the investment is intended to remove existing bottlenecks in the meltshop and increase the overall production capacity of the site. The VD plant will also enable TYASA to expand production of higher-quality steel grades.
The supplier's scope of delivery includes the mechanical equipment, vacuum pump system, hydraulic and fluid systems, electrical equipment as well as Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems. Primetals Technologies will also provide installation and commissioning support.
Integrated with existing facilities
The new vacuum degassing facility has been designed to integrate closely with TYASA's existing secondary metallurgy equipment, including the twin ladle furnaces previously supplied by Primetals Technologies.
Both systems will operate on the same rail tracks and use the same ladle cars, reducing crane movements and improving material flow throughout the production process. The configuration will allow ladle furnace treatment and vacuum degassing to be carried out with minimal handling requirements.
The new installation will primarily support production at TYASA's Castrip casting and rolling facility and enable an LF-VD-LF processing route designed to improve productivity across the meltshop.
Long-standing cooperation
The latest order further strengthens the long-standing relationship between TYASA and Primetals Technologies. The Mexican steel producer already operates several technologies supplied by the plant builder, including an EAF Quantum electric arc furnace, twin ladle furnaces, a Castrip line and a reversing cold mill.
Primetals Technologies also supports TYASA through maintenance services provided from its workshop operations in Mexico.
TYASA is a family-owned steel producer employing more than 3,000 people and manufactures special steels, flat products, coated steels and construction steels for domestic and international markets.
