Wuppermann opens advanced tube mill in Austria expanding premium capacity

Wuppermann Metalltechnik (WMT) has officially opened a new tube mill at its site in Altmünster, Austria, marking a major step in expanding capacity and strengthening its position in high-end steel tube and profile production.

More than 100 guests from industry, business and politics attended the opening ceremony on April 24, with the company presenting what it describes as one of Europe’s most advanced tube production facilities.

Investment strengthens capacity and product range

The new plant significantly expands WMT’s production capabilities, particularly in the segment of complex high-strength profiles. The facility is designed to process advanced steel grades such as DP800, DP980 and 22MnB5, with tensile strengths of up to 1,000 MPa, and can manufacture sophisticated special profiles with wall thicknesses of up to 4 mm.

Fully automated material handling, high-bay storage systems and digitally integrated logistics and production processes are aimed at ensuring high efficiency and consistent product quality.

The investment, amounting to around €40 million, was first announced in 2023 as part of a long-term growth strategy.

Focus on efficiency, digitalisation and sustainability

Wuppermann emphasises that the new facility was designed with a strong focus on automation, energy efficiency and sustainability from the outset. The plant includes highly digitalised production processes and modern logistics systems, while geothermal probes have been installed to enable climate-neutral heating.

Initial construction began in early 2024, with production starting in mid-2025. The gradual commissioning of key technologies, including inline rolling and internal pipe processing, has enabled the production of premium-grade tubes with tight tolerances.

Strengthening European production base

“With this investment, one of the most modern tube mills worldwide has been created,” said Oliver Rechtsprecher, spokesperson of the Executive Board of Wuppermann AG. “We remain a quality leader for our customers, produce with maximum efficiency and secure European production.”

Dr. C.L. Theodor Wuppermann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, added that the project reflects the company’s long-term approach: “With this decision, we are taking a major technological step forward in tubes and profiles while enabling future growth without compromising our financial stability.”

Part of a broader group strategy

WMT, based in Upper Austria, specialises in high-quality steel tubes, profiles and sheet metal components for a wide range of industries, including automotive, construction, logistics and mechanical engineering.

It is part of the Wuppermann Group, a family-owned steel processing company headquartered in Leverkusen with more than 150 years of history. The group operates multiple production sites across Europe and focuses on value-added steel products, including coated flat steel, tubes and profiles.
